[Webinar] Perkim #34: Disaster Resilient Settlements in Robust Prone Areas (Permukiman Tangguh Bencana di Daerah Rawan Rob)

The webinar series on “Disaster Resilient Settlements in Robust Prone Areas” hosted its 34th session, featuring esteemed speaker Dr. Dyah Rahmawati Hizbaron, S.Si., M.T., M.Sc. from the Department of Environmental Geography. Dr. Hizbaron provided an insightful presentation on the causes of tidal flood disasters, including global warming, changes in ideal watershed conditions due to upstream waste material, decreased river storage capacity, and excessive use of groundwater. 

The title of the webinar refers to a disaster that frequently occurs on the north coast of Java Island, particularly in Demak Regency, resulting in various problems such as slum settlements, damaged infrastructure, psychological impacts on affected residents, and losses due to building retrofitting costs. The webinar aimed to review the efforts to create tidal disaster-resilient settlements and mitigation strategies for tidal disasters.  read more

The National Seminar and Exhibition on Dissemination of Superior Applied Research Results from Higher Education in the Bompon Sub-Watershed, organized by the UGM Center for Land Resource Management Studies, featured several lecturers from the Department of Environmental Geography as speakers. The seminar, held offline on Thursday, August 4, 2022, at the Hall of the Regional Government Complex (Pemda) of Magelang Regency, aimed to address the reduction of risk associated with disasters such as droughts, erosion, and landslides resulting from rainwater runoff from residential areas and agricultural land in the Transition Landscape Zone of the Sumbing Quaternary Volcano and the Kulonprogo Tertiary Volcano in Central Java. read more

[Seminar] Synergy of Social Protection Policies, Climate Change and Disasters-Policy Design, Challenges and Implementation

On June 9, 2022, the Center for Population Studies (PSKK) at UGM hosted a seminar with the theme “Synergy of Social Protection Policy, Climate Change and Disasters – Design, Challenges and Implementation of the Policy”. Among the speakers was Dr. Dyah Rahmawati Hizbaron, S.Si., M.T., M.Sc., an expert in Disaster Studies at UGM’s Department of Environmental Geography.

Dr. Hizbaron’s presentation contributed to the seminar’s objective of exploring the intersections of social protection policy, climate change, and disasters. As a lecturer in an esteemed academic department, Dr. Hizbaron is well-versed in the complexities of this field and brought a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the seminar. read more
